HISTORY

In October 2006, CuDC bought the property at 1835 14th Street NW what we today call Source from The Source Theatre Company. News circulated in the winter of 2006 that a restaurateur would likely buy the 14th Street theatre and redevelop it as a restaurant and billiards parlor; CuDC took action. To understand our role, it's important to take stock of the scene at the time.
The arts community faced losing DC's only 150-seat rental venue a crucial size for small- and mid-size performing arts groups. Losing the theatre to commercial retail space translated to the loss of an irreplaceable asset; the cost of building another black box theatre, particularly along the revitalized 14th Street Arts Corridor, would be insurmountable to any arts organization in the city. Artists, neighbors, government leaders, funders and community activists rallied and enlisted CuDC's leadership to preserve the historic theatre.
Today, CuDC is scripting a new path for Source. Although The Source Theatre Company ceases to exist, they left a legacy that makes us proud. For 28 years, The Source Theatre Company hosted many of DC's finest actors, directors, playwrights and theatre companies. We look forward to keeping that tradition alive when Source re-opens in 2008.
