For more than two decades, Source Theatre Company's Washington Theatre Festival was an incubator and a catalyst for virtually every major theatre artist working in Washington today. Created by Source's Founding Artistic Director, Bart Whiteman, it filled a void in the Washington theatre scene by providing a place for artists to converge and create outside the confines of established theater companies. It was a place for new voices to be heard and for actors, playwrights and directors to collaborate and network. Whether any given piece was successful or not, there were two undeniable traits: Artists from all walks of life were working together and everyone was taking artistic risks.
In 2006, Cultural Development Corporation (CuDC) purchased the Source Theatre Company's space at 1835 14th Street, NW and launched a 3.5 million dollar capital campaign to renovate the building. Keeping Source as the building's name, CuDC also promised to revive the Washington Theater Festival.
The ultimate goal was to honor the legacy of festival's past while creating a unique format that made it different from other performing arts events in DC. The structure developed not only makes Source Festival unique in Washington, but makes it unlike anything else happening in the United States today. The festival is 100% new work that includes eighteen 10-Minute Plays, 3 full-length plays, 4 "Artistic Blind Dates" and a one-of-a-kind opening night event. Driven by creativity, collaboration and invention, the dynamic connections made here launch the careers of Washington’s next generation of theatre artists. We invite you to come watch tradition and innovation collide in an event that showcases Washington's most promising artists.
You will only find it at the Source.
