Source Festival

Each summer Source Festival employs more than 200 artists to present 25 new works over 3 weeks in June and July. The Festival incorporates theatre artists, visual artists, dancers, musicians and more. Read below to learn how you can get involved.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACTORS

Source Festival will be holding its annual Non-Equity open call auditions on February 1, 2, and 3, 2012 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.. Source Festival is looking to cast eighteen 10-Minute plays and three Full-Length Plays. These plays are all world premieres, selected from a nationwide pool of more than 700 submissions. Each play will be directed by one of DC’s innovative and exciting freelance directors. The 10-Minute and Full-Length Plays will be presented throughout the Festival which spans June 8 – July 1, 2012. All roles are non-Equity and paid.

Please prepare one contemporary monologue no longer then 90 seconds and please bring 1 hard copy of your headshot/resume to the audition. Do not mail headshots/resumes please.

Callbacks will be held during the day on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 and Wednesday, February 15, 2012. Please keep these days open. Actors being called back will be notified by February 5, 2012.

Source Festival auditions will be audited by Jenny McConnell Frederick (Producer of Source Festival/Mead Theater Lab and Co-Artistic Director of Rorschach Theatre) and Patrick Magill (Associate Producer of Source Festival and Freelance Director/Stage Manager).

OPPORTUNITIES FOR DESIGNERS, STAGE MANAGERS & RUN CREW

Source Festival is currently staffing non-equity stage managers, run crew, and designers (set, costumes, lighting, and sound) for the 2012 Source Festival. Technical rehearsals and performances for the 2012 Source Festival will be June 8th-July 1st, 2012. OPPORTUNITIES FOR DIRECTORS

Each year, Source Festival chooses up to three artists to direct a Full-Length play. In previous years, directors have received grants of up to $2,500 per person, which includes a $600 stipend plus a materials and supplies budget to be managed by Festival staff. Directors not selected for the Full-Length Plays will be in consideration for directing one or more of the 18 Ten-Minute Plays during the Festival.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PLAYWRIGHTS

Each year, Source Festival produces 18 new 10-Minute Plays and 3 new Full-Length Plays. Scripts are staged by a wide cross section of Washington theatre directors, from early career to seasoned veterans. The 18 selected playwrights receive a small stipend and 5 performances of their play in Source’s 100-seat black box theatre in DC’s buzzing Mid-City District. Ten-Minute Plays are accepted through a nation-wide open call and Full-Length plays accepted on an invitation only basis. The plays are each read twice by our panel of readers made up of theatre artists; including directors, playwrights, actors, producers, and audience members.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEATRE ARTISTS, PLAYWRIGHTS, DEVISERS, VISUAL ARTISTS, DANCERS & MUSICIANS
Artistic Blind Dates

Up to 9 artists from any discipline will be selected and teamed up in three groups of three for “artistic blind dates”. Five months later, they reveal what they’ve created and engage the audience in a dialogue about their artistic process. Artists will receive grants up to $250 per person.

THE FINE PRINT
ELIGIBILITY

Applicants for the Full-Length Play Director positions, and for the Artistic Blind Dates must be residents of the greater Washington region defined as: Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland, the District of Columbia; Cities of Falls Church & Alexandria, and Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun Counties in Virginia. Actors, designers, crew and playwrights submitting 10-Minute plays have no specific residency requirements—though it’s worth noting that the Festival does not provide travel or housing for participating artists.

SELECTION CRITERIA

When selecting Full-Length Play directors and Artistic Blind Date Participants, the Source Festival staff and Advisory Panel will consider application based upon the following criteria:
• Artistic merit of past work
• Innovation and originality of past work
• Capacity to engage in meaningful collaboration with other artists
• Capacity for significant career advancement through participation in the Source Festival
